International Sculpture Biennale 2010 in Carrara (June – September). It has been presented these days, the XIV International Sculpture Biennale in Carrara, that will take place in this Tuscanian city from June 26 to October 31.
This year the exhibition is curated by Fabio Cavallucci, former director of the Galleria Civica in Trento, coordinator of Manifesta and promoter of major national and international projects.
This personality can give a wider breath to this Biennale, situated in one of most precious worldwide area for white marble.
Since Roman times fine artists, sculptors, architects had come here to find the most amazing marble blocks. Reinassance artist such as Donatello and Michelangelo and then Giambologna, Bernini, Canova and many others. Nowadays not only the white one is highly requested but also the ‘grey vein white marble’ is the best for luxury furnitures and worshipped throughtout the world.
The program of the Sculpture Biennale in Carrara this year includes a historical selection that will be leading the way to contemporary works. As you may know sculpture has got a highly connected history and in this edition the works of contemporary sculptors have been confronted with that of Leonardo Bistolfi, Arturo Martini and Fausto Melotti.
The core of the exhibition relies in the comparison with the contemporary: with a greater commitment exhibition than the previous edition, several internationally acclaimed authors have been invited and asked to create site-specific works. We are speaking about Antony Gormley, Cai Guo-Qiang, Damian Ortega, Daniel Knorr and many other important namesin the international scene, who will be presented in the next future.
Carrara, with its fantastic position at the feet of the mountains and very close to the sea, will provide to you a fantastic art trip. It’s possible also to visit marble caves and attend many free shows, organized frequently in the summer in the central plazas.
These days, waiting for the main event, it is going to be organized “Towards the Biennale“, a program of seminars about contemporary art produced in collaboration with the Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara and “Educational Biennale“, a plan of approach step-by-step to the Biennale, that will involve insitutions at all levels, from primary to secondary school.
Since 1957 the International Sculpture Biennale has celebrated the close relationship between this territory and the marble, here called the white gold. Contemporary artist like Henry Moore, Robert Morris, Richard Long, Mario Merz, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Giulio Paolini, Louise Bourgeois, Hidetoshi Nagasawa, Stephan Balkenhol, Antony Gormley, Marc Quinn, have taken part to the exhibitions, that, apart from the main frame development, includes special projects, dislocated in the city of Carrara.
