For a relaxing day under an umbrella, follow the course of the River Arno, towards Marina di Pisa where the coastal areas extend towards Tirrenia and Calambrone with beaches furnished with sun loungers and shaded by parks with restaurants, hotels and nightlife.
Volterra, a hill top walled medieval town is worth a visit during city breaks in Pisa. Today Volterra lives for tourism with great views, enjoyable walking and is home to one of Italy’s important Etruscan museums. It is also at the heart of a mining region which yields alabaster with many shops selling artefacts.
Not to miss is Palazzo dei Priori an eye-catcher built between 1208 and 1257, said to be one of the oldest palaces in Italy, and Piazza del Duomo built in Romanesque style.
