250 km Cycling Route in Tuscany along the Arno riverside. Arno is the second largest river in central Italy after the Tiber and the main in Tuscany.
Arno has a total length of 241 km that passes trough the main territories of this region (Casentino, Val di Chiana, Arezzo, The upper Valdarno, Pratomagno, Siena province, Florence, Sesto Fiorentino, Campi Bisenzio, Prato, Pistoia, Sieve, Middle Valdarno, Lower Valdarno, Val di Pesa, Val d’Elsa, Val d’Era, Pontedera).
It borns in the Tuscan-Romagnolo Apennines, at an altitude of 1358 m above sea level, and flows into the Ligurian Sea passing through Pisa.
The source of the Arno, called Capo d’Arno is located in the province of Arezzo. This will be the starting point of an extraordinary cycling route that is going to be built. Along its route through several cities and towns, the most important are Florence, Empoli, Santa Croce sull’Arno, Pontedera and Pisa, Arno will host a special way for travellers who love visiting Tuscany keeping in touch with nature. Arno riverside also host traditional craft activities related to tanneries and textiles.
This impressive and safe bike path along the route of the Arno in Tuscany from the source to the mouth, will be built early. It will bring yourselves through a picturesque and certainly appreciated landscape, from the Province of Arezzo – Monte Falterone, to the river junction to the sea, in Marina di Pisa. It’s an ambitious but feasible project, that keeps together Tuscany Region, Province of Arezzo, Florence, Prato, Pisa and the Italian Cycling Federation.
Today a ‘technical commission’ is considering the feasibility of the project. Tuscany Government will allocate a fund of 70.000 euros for the preliminary work. This project is not only for tourists. As discussed in the Regional Minister for Transports, Riccardo Conti says that many Tuscans uses the bike once a week and 1/5 of the total inhabitants uses it daily.
