The Dome in Siena, the famous Gothic cathedral in Tuscany

The Dome in Siena, the famous Gothic cathedral in Tuscany. While going to Siena, take some time to visit the Dome.

Located near Piazza del Campo, the monument is a must place to see while you are in the city, since it is very well known not only in the Tuscan region, but also all across the country.

Built between 1215 and 1263, the cathedral has the shape of a Latin cross having a dome and a bell tower. The exterior part is very impressive and it has to be enjoyed as much as the interior. The main colors in which the outside is decorated are with and greenish-black in alternating stripes, recalling those which are the symbolic colors of the city of Siena.

The church is a great Gothic building containing masterpieces of some of the best Tuscan artists, such as Pisano, Donatello, Michelangelo and Pinturicchio.

Some tourists are surprised to find out they have to pay to get into the cathedral: the admission fee is 3€, and no reductions are offered.

That’s the main reason why most of them skip it, but they don’t know what they are losing! The baptistery, crypt and Opera museum are definitely worth the price, plus you can also get into the Piccolomini Library.

There are also available the so-called OPA Si Passes, the cumulative tickets for families, which allow to visit not only the cathedral but also other monuments in the area.

The opening hours change according to the seasons, following this schedule:
March 1 – November 2: from10:30 am to 7 pm
November 3 – February 28: from10:30 am to 5:30 pm
December 26 – January 6: from 10:30 am to 7 pm

During the holidays, such as Christmas, or the days of the Palio, there are special opening hours always according to the time of the year.
